The following list gives all those men from the South Irish Horse (SIH) who qualified to receive the 1914 Star. This medal was issued under the following circumstances;
Under Army order 11 of 24th November 1917.
For award to all those officers and men of the British and Indian expeditionary forces including civilian medical practitioners nursing sister's nurses and others employed with military hospitals who actually served in France or Belgium on the establishment of the unit between 5th of August 1914 and midnight on the 22nd / 23rd November 1914. Officers and men of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Naval Reserve and Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who served on the establishment of a unit landed for shore service in France or Belgium between the same dates were also eligible but not those who served afloat.

Following this, on the 19th October 1919 it was announced that the King had approved the issue of a bar to those already awarded the 1914 Star 'who actually served under the fire of the enemy in France or Belgian' between the dates mentioned above. We have not included this information within the list below but those of you who might want it, please contact me.

The majority of these men would have been with "B" Sqn of the SIH, for more information about their movements see the War Diaries page. One of the men on this list, W Acheson, turned out to be a family friend, whom my father described as being "An officer from a cavalry regiment" This was correct on both counts, he was from a cavalry regiment and he did become an officer. On this same subject notice the high proportion of men who gained commissions, testifying to the high calibre of these gallant Irishmen.

There were of course just as many men who never left the shores of Ireland and we may never know their names.
